Microcement Loft Bathroom, Crouch End
A top-floor bathroom finished in seamless microcement, with underfloor heating and a freestanding bath.
We turned the top floor of this Crouch End house into a large bathroom finished in seamless microcement. We framed out new walls with concealed cisterns and laid wet underfloor heating. Floor and walls were then finished in microcement, giving one joint-free surface around a freestanding bath. Elsewhere in the house we laid new engineered oak flooring.
The space
The top floor of the house had sloping ceilings, good rooflights and plenty of floor area, but it was not being used. We stripped it back to the rafters and planned a bathroom that makes the most of the height and the light.
First fix
We built new stud walls with concealed cistern frames for the wall-hung WC and basin, then ran the plumbing before the walls were closed in. Water-fed underfloor heating went in under the new floor, so the room is warm underfoot without radiators taking up wall space.
- New studwork with concealed cistern frames
- First-fix plumbing for bath, basin and WC
- Water-fed underfloor heating
The microcement finish
Floor and walls are finished in microcement. It is applied by hand in thin layers over a reinforcing mesh, then sealed. The result is one continuous, joint-free surface with no grout lines to clean, and it works well over underfloor heating.
A freestanding bath, a wall-hung basin and simple pendant lights keep the room calm and uncluttered.
Elsewhere in the house
Downstairs, we laid new engineered oak flooring through the living room, finished in a natural brushed oak.
