House Renovation, Stroud Green
Structural work, a new roof and careful restoration on a Victorian house in Stroud Green.
A major renovation of a Victorian house in Stroud Green. The structural work covered new steel beams, a rebuilt roof structure, new floor joists and a reinforced concrete slab. We then insulated the house, repaired and repointed the brickwork and made good the chimneys. Floors were tiled over Schlüter Ditra membrane, with patterned floor tiles and hexagonal wall tiles in the bathrooms. At the front we rebuilt the steps and garden walls around a restored Victorian tiled path and entrance, and we landscaped the rear garden.
Structure first
The house needed significant structural work before anything else could happen. We propped the building, put in new steel beams and replaced tired floor joists. Where the ground floor was dug out, we cast a new reinforced concrete slab.

Roof
The roof was rebuilt with a new timber structure, insulated and re-covered. While the scaffold was up, we also repaired and capped the chimney stacks.
Brickwork
Damaged and spalled bricks were cut out and replaced with good matches, and the walls were repointed. On a Victorian house like this, matching the brick and the mortar matters as much as the repair itself.
Floors and tiling
Floors were levelled and tiled over Schlüter Ditra uncoupling membrane, which stops movement in the floor from cracking the tiles above. Bathrooms were finished with patterned floor tiles and hexagonal wall tiles, and the vanity units have fluted fronts.
Front entrance and garden
At the front, we rebuilt the steps and garden walls in stock brick around a restored Victorian tiled path, and the entrance and front door were refinished. At the back, we cleared and levelled the garden, then laid it out with a new decking frame and landscaping.
