Garden Gym, Highgate
A cedar-clad garden gym built from bare ground, with the garden landscaped around it.
A garden gym built at the end of the garden as part of our renovation of the house. We dug out and poured a new concrete base, framed the building in treated timber and insulated the walls and roof with PIR board. It is clad in cedar, with a large glazed sliding door facing the house. Around it we landscaped the garden with a new lawn, gravel paths and planting.
Groundworks
We built the gym at the end of the garden as part of our renovation of the main house. We set out the footprint, dug trenches for the foundations and fixed timber formwork, then poured a level concrete base for the building to sit on.
Frame and insulation
The building is framed in treated timber on a damp-proof membrane. Walls and roof are fully insulated with foil-faced PIR board, so the gym stays usable all year round rather than just in summer.
- Treated timber frame on a damp-proof membrane
- PIR insulation to walls and roof
- Breather membrane wrap before cladding
Cladding and glazing
The outside is clad in cedar, which weathers naturally over time. A large glazed sliding door faces the house and fills the room with light.
The garden
Once the building was finished, we landscaped the garden around it. A curved lawn, gravel paths and new planting tie the gym back to the house, and cedar slatted fencing matches the cladding.
